Lionel Messi in all likely is to play his second match in the USA as his side Inter Miami take on Atlanta United in Leagues Cup 2023 at the DRV PNK Stadium in Florida.
This is the second group match for Inter Miami, who defeated Mexican club Cruz Azul 2-1 in their opening game with Lionel Messi firing in the winner in the 94th minute after coming on as a substitute in the 54th minute. The goal was a fitting announcement of his arrival as he curled in the goal from a free-kick.
The match also saw the debut of another star arrival in Sergio Busquets as the Spanish World Cup winner came in from Catalan giants FC Barcelona in a reunion with Lionel Messi. The former Barca duo came on as substitute together in the second half to win the match for Inter Miami.
Atlanta United are playing their first game in the three-team Group J and lost their last Major League Soccer game 1-2 to Orlando City 10 days ago. MLS is currently on hold as the Leagues Cup, which also features clubs from Mexico’s Ligue MX, is currently underway. The top two teams from the 15 groups will qualify for the knockout stages, including two lucky losers.
Atlanta United are still a tough challenge for the Miami outfit as the side is currently placed seventh in the points table with 35 points in 24 games while Inter Miami are dead last with just 18 points in the 15-club East Conference of MLS.
