The 35-year-old came within a whisker of lifting the World Cup in 2014 but the Albiceleste were beaten by Germany in the final in extra time, and Qatar 2022 looks like being his last dance in the competition.

Argentina’s next match at the World Cup
Argentina booked their ticket to the World Cup semifinal after a brusing affair with Lousi Van Gall’s Netherland was decided on penalties with the Argentines winning 3-4 on penalties. Messi was crucial over the 120 minutes of gametime, setting up Nahuel Molina’s opener in the 35th minute before smashing a penalty home in the 73rd minute himeself.
The Dutch came back though and thanks to two late goals from Besiktas’ Wout Weghorst they headed to Extra Time where they traded chances to take the game. Messi stepped up for the first penalty and scored the first of four that saw Argentina advancing to a semifinal meeting against Croatia.
The Albiceleste overcame the shock defeat to Saudi Arabia in their opener by beating Mexico and Poland to progress to the knockout rounds as Group C winners.
Argentina’s reward for beating Australia is a World Cup quarter-final fixture against the Netherlands, who won Group A.
The match will take place at the Lusail Stadium on Tueday, December 13.
Argentina v Croatia will be the first semifinal of the 2022 World Cup. The match is scheduled to kick off at 19:00 GMT.
