Hey it’s Raj from 3CB.
PSG megastar Lionel Messi took a knock to his left knee vs Lyon over the weekend and was removed in the 76th minute, an astute proactive move by manager Mauricio Pochettino. Much was made of Messi’s frustrated reaction but he’s an ultra competitor who wants to play so it’s a non-story to me.
The next day, the Argentinean legend was clearly limping into the training ground and an MRI scan on tuesday revealed a “bone bruise” of the knee.
The injury
A “bone bruise” is medically known as a microtrabecular fracture and categorized into three different types. Messi very likely has a sub-periosteal hematoma based on the direct knock to his knee.
Return Timeline
Messi has been ruled out for Wednesday’s game vs Metz and will undergo reassessment in 48 hours. This will very likely be to assess how the discomfort level has changed and if it’s still impacting his movement.
The overall timeline with knee bone bruises varies significantly – it can be as little as 3-5 days to over a month. It really comes down to the specific area of bruising as certain parts of the knee come under higher load and more frequently and pain tolerance.
Messi is notorious for his ability to play through pain and discomfort and has returned very quickly from previous injuries which bodes well. That being said, this will really be a day to day assessment situation because these injuries can evolve quickly, for better or for worse.
His status for the Champions League match vs Manchester City in a week’s time certainly remains up in the air for now.
