USMNT News & Updates Yanks Abroad: Dest wins Copa del Rey
It was an exciting weekend for ALL the Americans with the return of Major League Soccer this weekend. But the Yanks Abroad turned in some big performances and played in very important matches as well.
We start in Spain, where Sergiño Dest and FC Barcelona won the Copa del Rey with a 4-0 shutout at Athletic Club. Dest is the first American to ever win the trophy. Check out our boy playing a part in this brilliant, vintage Lionel Messi run.
Dest got his picture with Messi, after waiting in a hilarious line of teammates.
Two Americans faced off in the FA Cup Semifinal on Saturday as well. Zack Steffen started for Manchester City & Christian Pulisic came off the bench for Chelsea FC in the 70th minute. Chelsea got the 1-0 win and advance to the final. Unfortunately, Steffen was caught out of position and carries most of the blame for the only goal of the match. Pulisic thought he had scored one himself, making it all the way to the sideline in celebration before seeing it called back for being offside.
And we’re only just getting started!
Gio Reyna scored an absolute stunner of a goal in Borussia Dortmund’s 4-1 win over Werder Bremen on Sunday. Reyna was dangerous throughout the match, but his goal in the 29th minute brought his team level and sparked a run of three goals in just nine minutes. Check out the video below of a nice run he had. It was one of his four completed dribbles on the day, the most of any player. Josh Sargent also featured in this match, coming off the bench in the 59th minute for Werder Bremen.
He’s been putting together a really solid season in Germany’s second tier, and Julian Green scored another on Friday. It may have been from point blank range, but it was a very quick reaction from Green to poke the ball home.
Konrad de la Fuente was on the scoresheet for Barcelona B over the weekend. He’s been on the bench for the senior team several times in 2021, but has not yet seen the pitch. However, he’s been turning in very promising performances for the B squad.
Taylor Booth scored his third goal (through eight matches) for St. Pölten. He played 72 minutes in the 2-1 loss vs Austria Wien. Brandon Servania also played 83 minutes in this match. Erik Palmer-Brown was not in the lineup for Austria Wien.
We also got some some Yunus Musah shenanigans as well. Watch this fantastic run in Valencia’s 2-2 draw at Real Betis, and daydream with me about the United States winning the World Cup.
