Could David Beckham really bring Lionel Messi to MLS?
According to reports from Catalunya radio, Club de la Mitjanit, Inter Miami CF president David Beckham is said to be targeting none other than Lionel Messi to join Inter Miami as the centerpiece for his new club when they begin play in MLS in 2020.

Due to a clause in his current deal that allows the Argentinian to leave at the end of any season, Messi holds most of the cards in the deck in deciding where his next destination outside of Barcelona may be, if he so chooses to take that route. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has expressed an interest in returning to his childhood club Newell’s Old Boys, but Barcelona are reported to have been preparing a lifetime contract to keep him at the Catalan Giants.
Should Messi leave before next June when he’ll turn 33, it would trigger a $733 million buyout clause, which, lets face it, an expansion MLS side just cannot afford at this time, so the move to the United States domestic league is probably out of the question at this time.
However, let’s not discount the star power that David Beckham still holds within the international footballing community. There have been reports linking Beckham and Inter Miami CF to PSG forward Edinson Cavani and even an inkling from Barcelona’s Antoine Griezmann that if the former England national player came calling, he might be inclined to join him in Miami.

The MLS has seen its fair share of former stars from European powers join the league. Look no further than the LA Galaxy’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic, DC United’s Wayne Rooney or even Beckham himself who made a splash back in 2007 when he joined the Galaxy from Real Madrid. What will be the measuring stick for Beckham and ultimately MLS will be to sign a player the caliber of a Messi, Cavani or Griezmann in the primes of their career. If there’s a catalyst for such a move, it just might be Beckham.
What do you think? Does David Beckham have a chance in landing Lionel Messi?
